Location: 
West Spitsbergen Island. Billefjorden bay. Brucebyen. This species grows relatively rarely in shallow pools in the tundra in the vicinity of Petuniabukta. It was found in mutually similar localities, particularly in small lakes in the Brucebyen area comprising several large tundra pools.

West Spitsbergen Island. Petuniabukta bay. Subaerophytic, on small wet rocks with slightly streaming (dripping) water in tundra biome. S. nigra is an important species colonizing wet and bare rocks, forming macroscopic hemispherical colonies facilitating accumulation of detritus on stony substrates.
